Do We Need A Rooster?

I need help from those who read this blog and who know a thing or two about chickens.

Friends of ours will have some chicks for us in just a few weeks. I’m horribly excited, to tell the truth!

What I need to find out is, do I really need a rooster? I don’t have plans of hatching my own chicks just yet, so I don’t need him for that. But I wonder about having one to keep the hens safe.

What do you think? Should I get a rooster too?

  1. We rec’d two peeps of unknown gender and purchased five more, all to be hens. It turned out one peep was a rooster, which we figured out at 2 months. As we reside in town, we could not keep the rooster. We miss him but he has a new flock. Anyway, the rooster was definitely the leader and the defender, but as they mature they can cause a ruckus. They are unnecessary in keeping egg layers and your flock will be mellower. I would have kept our rooster if we were not in town. My husband is of the opinion that the peeps will acclimate and be just fine.

    Grace and Peace

  2. You don’t need a rooster to get eggs, but trust me, it won’t be long before you want to hatch your own chicks!

  3. Do the chickens lay more eggs if they have a rooster?
